  • Who is Because We Can?

Because We Can Music is company and concept created by recording artist Alan Whitney. Alan is ready to offer his own talent and guidance as an experienced music producer, consultant, engineer, song expert, accomplished studio musician, as well as connection to other fine music business professionals and technology to help you make your project a success.

"I am all too aware of the obstacles faced by artists struggling to capture great recordings of themselves that make a high quality product. Recording is a creative process. While studios and owning equipment offer the means to record, they offer little help and direction with solving the complicated problems associated with any recording project. This is why I created Because We Can."

"Alan Whitney breathed life into my song 'Pennsylvania'. His arrangement and production style gave it the personality it needed to become a stunning work of art. The song exists exactly as it should now."
-Dee Adams (www.deetuned.com)
"Alan Whitney has been working for me in the capacity of producer for a recording of original and cover material. He has added much to the quality and arrangement of the recording, drawing on a clear understanding of the technology and innate familiarity with the recording process. He has an in-depth understanding of the singer-songwriter's task to bring original art to the recorded media. He has a good ear for message clarity in songwriting, and has provided valuable guidance in the selection and arrangement of original work. I have become very comfortable with the manner and content of his guidance. I have found him to be easy to work with on a technical and personal level, and very honest and forthright in business dealings. I am routinely amazed at the positive change he has brought to my album and highly recommend him to others involved in or considering a recording project."

  • My Training & Background

Writing songs, making music, and recording has been my life's work. Learning the art of music recording and becoming a craftsperson of the studio is a daunting journey. I have been very lucky in my career to learn on the job with some of the finest session musicians, engineers, songwriters, and producers in Los Angeles and in Nashville. I was young and very green but they were good teachers and I learned fast. They taught me how to listen and perform under the microscopic scrutiny of the studio. I worked hard and it didn't take long before I was getting many calls for session work. This was my higher education and my first shot at the music business. The LA and Nashville recording industry is a tight machine and I feel fortunate that I did my apprenticeship there.

  • What Does a Record Producer do?

Good Question. There have been times I've wondered about this myself as I have encountered the stereotypical jelly doughnut eating, meddling, couch beast. The subject is, at best, undefined and certainly up for interpretation.

As a producer, I define myself as a skilled listener. I start by taking a detailed inventory of all the elements. My primary concern is with the material and perspective of the artist. It's my job to help the artist bring their creative perspective to the media. To me, great recordings start with great songs and music, and are finished by utilizing the right processes and technology. My experience as a staff songwriter in Nashville and Los Angeles has given me a full spectrum of recording skills. I learned each role from songwriter to session musician as well as engineer to producer.

My process is to prepare the artist and make way for their musical ideas to travel though the technical universe and come out through the speakers clearly and expressively. I believe that the sound of a recording should fit the artist and the material presented. It should reflect the creative moment and who they are. I simply provide access and connection to the proper tools, creative and highly skilled people, a positive and supportive environment, as well as a strong, organized business and artistic sense to bring together a complete piece of work.
